Mifa AG: Increased production with less energy
At the Frenkendorf site, the investments in energy and environment management are having an impact: the ecological footprint has been substantially improved.
In the last five years, Mifa AG in Frenkendorf has invested almost 5 million francs for measures in the environmental area, and approx. 1.5 million francs alone for CO2 savings.
«At the beginning of this year, the compressed air system was replaced by a new, more efficient system for 630,000 francs,» says project engineer D. Reichenstein. A new energy centre for around 11 million francs is the next major investment.
Mr Madörin, energy consumption manager of MifA AG checks the energy consumption in the production. Through many different activities – from energy-saving light bulbs to new machines – the specific energy consumption has been substantially reduced.
Whether more efficient machines, an intelligent control of the
compressors, the use of frequency converters in ventilator motors or
optimised compressed air dryers: The team led by Fredy Kühnis,
environmental officer at Mifa AG, together with Technical Services,
constantly analyses all steps of the production as to how and where much
more energy can be saved.
«In the last few years, we have launched many small and large initiatives in order to reduce the energy consumption and our CO2 emissions. As a result, we have been exempted from the state CO2 levy for 2004 until 2012,» reports Kühnis.
Overall, the savings are substantial. For the first time in the company's history, a special goal has thus been reached: Whereas the production volume has increased, the energy consumption has fallen: not only relatively but also in absolute terms. It has therefore been possible to decouple the energy consumption from the production volume – the hard currency of sustainability.
«But we have much more planned and will be investing heavily in the next few years. Our new energy centre alone will cost around 11 million francs,» says Kühnis. Although these investments also have to pay off commercially, it is not just about money: «If we continue to save energy and reduce CO2, we will also reduce the so-called carbon footprint of our products. And thus also improve the carbon footprint of our clients - and ultimately also of everyone who uses our products.»
Thanks to the proposed energy saving measures, Mifa AG was exempted from the CO₂ levy for the second commitment period from 2013 – 2020.
Sustainability facts on energy consumption at Mifa AG:
- In the last five years, Mifa AG in Frenkendorf has invested almost 5 million francs for measures in the environmental area, and approx. 1.5 million francs alone for CO2 savings.
- The predicted costs for the environmental measures up to 2020 amount to around 12,5 million francs; this includes the new energy centre of Mifa AG with an investment volume of approx. 11 million francs.
- The electricity, gas and oil consumption as well as the CO2 emissions were substantially reduced between 2004 and 2013
